    Rural Water Supply and Construction Department

    The Rural Water Supply Program follows a demand-based policy and includes the Central Government’s supported Accelerated Rural Water Supply Program, Swajaladhara, and the State Government’s supported Mahajal, along with works under the Non-Tribal/Tribal, National Rural Drinking Water Program. Since the year 2019-2020, these programs have been transformed into the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme.
    Under the water supply scheme, the following water supply works can be undertaken.

    Percolation Well
    Widening and deepening of existing wells
    Bore Well (Hand Pump)
    Small Tap Water Supply Scheme
    Shivkalin Water Storage Scheme
    Repairs to existing schemes
    Strengthening of existing schemes
    Scheme expansion
    Auxiliary schemes
    New schemes
    Household individual tap connection (FHTC)

     

    Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The mission aims to provide functional household tap connections (FHTC) to every rural household by 2024, ensuring safe and adequate drinking water on a regular and long-term basis.

    Objectives of Jal Jeevan Mission

    1.Provide Tap Water Supply: Ensure 100% Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in rural areas.

    2.Safe & Adequate Drinking Water: Supply at least 55 liters per person per day (lpcd).

    3.Sustainability of Water Sources: Promote water conservation, recharge, and rainwater harvesting.

    4.Community Participation: Encourage local Gram Panchayats, Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) to manage and maintain water supply systems.

    5.Water Quality Monitoring: Regular testing and monitoring of water quality through local communities.

    6.Greywater Management: Promote wastewater treatment and reuse for agricultural and other purposes.

     

    Key Features of Jal Jeevan Mission

    • Decentralized Approach: Local village-level institutions are empowered for planning, implementation, and management.
    • Convergence with Other Schemes: Works in collaboration with MGNREGA, Swachh Bharat Mission, and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) for water conservation.
    • Technological Innovation: Use of IoT-based sensors, geo-tagging, and real-time monitoring of water supply systems.
    • Sustainability Measures: Rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and watershed management initiatives.

     

    Funding Pattern

    • For General States:
    • 50:50 Cost sharing between Central and State Governments
    • For Himalayan & North-Eastern States:
    • 90:10 Cost sharing between Central and State Governments
    • For Union Territories:
    • 100% Central Government funding
